Operafantomet: phantoming
If you’ve learned that there are no great women artists in history, it’s because of how art was rated. The finest kind of art was religious and historical paintings, and with some very few exceptions this art was only done by male artist with academy training. Portraiture was further down the list, and it was portraiture women artists did. Italian Sofonisba Anguissola is rated one of the finest, and she even became a court artist in Madrid. The portrait she did of her mother Bianca Ponzoni Anguissola in 1557 is one of my favourites. The gaze she’s captured is just spectacular.
